Advocates of socialism often cite equality as a justification for socialism. Bernie Sanders often points out the growing inequality of wealth in the United States and advocates for what he calls democratic socialism as a remedy.
But if under socialism the means of production, distribution, and exchange are owned or regulated by the community, what system do we currently have? Why are the wealthy getting more? The reason is that the regulatory structure is set up to benefit the well connected, reducing competition and enriching the powerful. It is the representatives of the people, the government, exerting control over the means of production, distribution and exchange for the benefit of the powerful corporations. This is often referred to as crony capitalism but should be called corporate socialism.
The debate going on is not about capitalism versus socialism but about corporate socialism versus egalitarian socialism.
